Surgery by Laparotomy

"Open" surgery is traditional surgery performed through a laparotomy incision as opposed to laparoscopic or "keyhole" surgery.  Advantages of open surgery include a larger area to operate through, direct tactile feedback for the surgeon, and in most cases a more rapid operating time.

The fundamentals of open surgery form the basis for all gynecologic surgery.  Many endoscopic surgeons will study open procedures and recreate them using laparoscopic techniques.

Gynecologic surgery for cancer is traditionally performed via open surgery and is demonstrated in this section.

This section of StreamOR will review the basic steps required for open surgery.  The standard steps for entering and closing the abdomen are reviewed.

The anatomy is especially well seen in the SurgeonCam clips.
